Herndon, VA / Washington, D.C. – NextStop Theatre Company opened “The Mountaintop” on Saturday, January 11. In this vivid and poetic play set in his hotel room the night before his assassination, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. meets a young maid who forces him to consider exactly who and what he is fighting for. NextStop’s production stars Curtis McNeil as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Shayla Simmons as the maid Camae. The Mountaintop is directed by two-time Helen Hayes award-winner Kevin McAllister.

Critical reviews are coming in with high praise:

“Curtis McNeil as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Shayla Simmons as Camae fully inhabit their characters in performances that evoke a vivid realness and true connections. They nimbly bring the political and the spiritual to the audience along with scenes of candid banter and teasing. With Hall’s imagination and McAllister’s sensitive touch, The Mountaintop’s Dr. King is an imperfect human with vanities; he is far removed from an all-knowing, confident, perfect person. Simmons and McNeil are remarkable in their naturalistic approach to their performances. ” – DC Metro Theater Arts

The Mountaintop is worth watching as much for its performances as its message. Curtis McNeil seems comfortable in the Reverend’s shoes, never lacking in charm but clearly haunted by the weight of the tasks in front of him. Simmons commands the room as Camae, who comes from a humble background but is more than capable of sparring effectively with her larger-than-life customer. The pair have terrific chemistry, whether they’re sharing a cigarette, teasing each other over his holey sock and smelly feet, or sincerely debating what sort of message King should be delivering to his loyal followers. Seeing the two sizzle on stage together is one of the main reasons The Mountaintop effectively resonates.” – DC Theatre Scene
