Internship Opportunities


2016-2017 Summer & Fall/Spring Semester Internships

As one of the fastest growing professional theatre companies in the DC Metropolitan area, NextStop Theatre Company provides students and early-career theatre professionals with a unique opportunity to gain significant hands-on experience and in-depth understanding of the day-to-day operations of a small regional theatre.

The 39 Steps at NextStop Theatre

Summer Internships

An 8-week program for high school theatre students to gain first hand knowledge and experience at a small professional theatre. Students will work directly with NextStop Theatre’s Production Manager, as well as the artistic and technical staff. They will participate in introductory activities and seminars related to the scenic and properties shop, costume shop, marketing department, and production process. The program will culminate in focused assignments in support of NextStop’s late Summer musical. 

Fall/Spring Internships

A 15-week internship program for aspiring and emerging theatre professionals to gain real world experience working with a small professional theatre. These opportunities will be discipline-specific and allow individuals to work hand-in-hand with NextStop’s artists, technicians, and administrators on full productions and organizational activities. Focus areas include: Technical Direction/Carpentry, Wardrobe/Costume Design, Stage Management, Marketing/Development, Directing, and Arts Administration. (Note: There are no performance-based internships available at this time.)


WHO: Summer internship opportunities available for rising high school juniors, seniors and college freshman. Fall and Spring semester internship opportunities available for college students and recent graduates.

WHERE: Most activities related to internships will take place at NextStop’s theater, scene shop, or costume shop in Herndon, Virginia. Participants will be provided the chance to see all NextStop productions, as well as to visit facilities and/or attend productions at other theaters. All interns must have a reliable means of transportation.

WHEN: Interns will be expected to contribute an average of 8 to10 hours per week, with variations based on availability and production schedules.

Summer: July 11- September 4, 2016

Fall Semester: August 29- December 11, 2016

Spring Semester: January 23- May 14, 2017
