ABOUT THE PLAY:

PINOCCHIO! is a Commedia dell’Arte adaptation of the world-renowned novel by Italian children’s writer Carlo Collodi. Originally penned as a serial in 1881, “Le avventure di Pinocchio” (The Adventures of Pinocchio) was the birth of a rascally wooden character who would grow to be a time-honored favorite. Commedia dell’Arte (“theatre of the professional”) originated in Italy in the early 16th century and quickly spread throughout Europe, creating a lasting influence on theater around the world. Much like the wily Commedia servant characters, our puppet hero has a habit of getting himself into scrapes, running into colorful characters, and trying his best even at his worst. With masks and innovative physical story-telling, this new production will marry Commedia’s bold theatricality to a tale of foxes, fairies, high-strung puppet-masters and underwater beasts, as a brave puppet finds his path to becoming a real boy, and learns the true meaning of family.
