“EAST OF EDEN is a significant story, and Hoffmann’s intelligent and evocative staging is exciting and compelling. The past is always with us — we are, after all, the product of our experiences — and here Steinbeck and Hoffmann have conspired to find a way to bring it to life again.” –DC Metro Theater Arts

Herndon, VA / Washington, D.C. – NextStop Theatre Company opened an adaptation of John Steinbeck’s “East of Eden” last weekend, to continue the 2018-2019 season. The novel has been adapted for the stage by Frank Galati, and directed by NextStop’s Producing Artistic Director, Evan Hoffmann.

After just directing “The Wedding Singer” at NextStop, Hoffmann calls this period his personal directing Olympics, and a juxtaposition that shows the range of work at NextStop. “East of Eden” is a passion project for Hoffmann. From a recent interview with DC Theatre Scene:

“EAST OF EDEN has been my favorite novel since I first read it nearly 20 years ago. I think that it had such a profound effect on me because it so beautifully (and effortlessly) matches up big ideas with simple truths,” Hoffmann says (Read the full interview here).

“East of Eden” asks if it is possible to escape the mistakes of previous generations and choose your own course. The cast includes John Sygar, Reginald Richard, Annie Ottati, Jacob Yeh, Kari Ginsburg, Alana Sharp, Zach Bewster-Geisz, Nahm Darr, William Price, Lorenzo Aten Falconi, Eva Jaber, and Nina Marti.

Critical and audience reviews coming in are overwhelmingly positive, with special emphasis on the talent of the cast:

“There was a strong dynamic between the always superb Zach Brewster-Geisz, as Adam Trask, and the phenomenal Jacob Yeh, who played his right-hand man and cook, Lee. Brewster-Geisz played a man who went through many emotional valleys and peaks with his rotten-souled wife, Cathy (played with caustic bitterness by Annie Ottati).” – DC Metro Theater Arts

“Reginald Richard, in his NextStop Theatre debut, captivated me in his dual roles as farmer Samuel and businessman Will Hamilton. Richard brought authenticity to his interactions with the other actors, particularly those with Brewster-Geisz.” – DC Metro Theater Arts

“Hoffmann is aided by a strong supporting cast. Eva Jaber and Nina Marti are excellent trading off the role of Abra Bacon, Aron’s childhood sweetheart. Their shared energy and physicality is almost uncanny.” – DC Theatre Scene

“The acting of all characters was fantastic, and the play was superbly directed and orchestrated.” – NextStop Patron
